The Erasmus+ program, funded by the European Union, is one of the most popular and generous scholarship and mobility programs for students around the world who want to study in Europe. Launched in 2014 as a successor to the original Erasmus program, Erasmus+ offers opportunities for students, trainees, teachers, and young people to gain international experience through study exchanges, joint degree programs, internships, and volunteer work. For international students, particularly at the master’s level, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs) under the Erasmus+ umbrella are highly prestigious, fully funded programs that combine study at two or more European universities, often culminating in a double or joint degree.

Understanding how Erasmus+ scholarships work can help you navigate the application process and maximize your chances of securing this competitive funding. Erasmus+ is designed to promote cross-border cooperation, improve the quality of education, strengthen ties between Europe and partner countries, and support personal and professional development. Each year, thousands of students from both EU and non-EU countries are selected to participate, receiving financial support that covers tuition fees, travel costs, insurance, and a monthly living allowance.
The most well-known Erasmus+ opportunity for international students is the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree. These are integrated, high-level international study programs delivered by a consortium of at least three European higher education institutions, often in collaboration with universities from other parts of the world. As a student, you spend semesters at two or more universities, gaining exposure to different academic cultures, research traditions, and learning environments. The programs are designed to foster international cooperation, academic excellence, and employability, making EMJMD graduates highly attractive to employers worldwide.
To apply for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree, you first need to identify the specific program that matches your academic interests and career goals. The official Erasmus Mundus catalog lists all available master’s programs, covering a wide range of fields such as engineering, environmental studies, public health, law, linguistics, social sciences, and information technology. Each program has its own eligibility criteria, application timeline, and selection process, so it’s crucial to read the program website carefully and follow the provided instructions.
Most Erasmus Mundus applications require a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, a strong academic record, proof of English proficiency (often through IELTS or TOEFL scores), letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and sometimes a research proposal or portfolio, depending on the subject area. Some programs also require work experience or specific technical skills. Deadlines typically fall between November and February for programs starting the following academic year, so it’s important to plan ahead and start preparing your application materials early.
One of the main advantages of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship is its comprehensiveness. Selected students receive full tuition coverage, which can range from €4,000 to €9,000 per year, depending on the program. In addition, they receive an annual travel allowance, an installation allowance to help with relocation costs, and a monthly living stipend of around €1,000. These benefits make it possible for students from all economic backgrounds to participate without the financial stress often associated with international education. Furthermore, the scholarship often includes health and accident insurance for the duration of the program.
Beyond financial support, the Erasmus+ experience offers incredible personal and professional benefits. Students join a diverse, international cohort, creating lifelong friendships and professional networks across Europe and beyond. The exposure to different educational systems, languages, and cultural environments broadens your horizons and enhances your adaptability, communication skills, and intercultural competence. Many Erasmus Mundus programs also include internships, research placements, or industry collaborations, giving students practical experience and improving their employability.
After completing an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree, graduates often find doors opening to exciting opportunities in academia, international organizations, government agencies, NGOs, and multinational companies. The Erasmus+ label carries significant prestige, signaling that the graduate has excelled in a rigorous, competitive international program and developed a global outlook. Some graduates continue their studies by pursuing a PhD, sometimes through Erasmus+ doctoral programs or Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, while others move directly into the job market.
For students who are not eligible for or interested in the Erasmus Mundus master’s programs, Erasmus+ also offers other opportunities, such as short-term study exchanges, traineeships (internships), and volunteer projects under the European Solidarity Corps. These programs are often available to undergraduate and master’s students already enrolled in European universities that have Erasmus+ agreements with partner institutions abroad. In such cases, students can spend three to twelve months at a partner university or organization, with funding provided to cover travel and living costs.
It’s worth noting that Erasmus+ is not just limited to students. Staff, faculty, and young professionals can also benefit from Erasmus+ funding for teaching, training, and capacity-building activities. This broad scope makes Erasmus+ one of the largest and most impactful international education and mobility programs in the world.
To maximize your chances of securing an Erasmus+ scholarship, it’s important to present a strong, thoughtful application that demonstrates your academic excellence, motivation, and potential for impact. Pay careful attention to the program’s selection criteria, tailor your personal statement to show how the program aligns with your goals, and provide clear, well-organized supporting documents. Make sure you meet all eligibility requirements, including language proficiency and degree background, and don’t hesitate to contact the program coordinator if you have specific questions.
In summary, Erasmus+ offers an outstanding opportunity for international students to access high-quality, fully funded education in Europe, gain international experience, and build global networks. Whether you are interested in a full master’s degree, a short-term exchange, or an internship abroad, the Erasmus+ program provides generous financial support and a life-changing educational experience. With careful preparation, strong application materials, and a clear understanding of the program’s expectations, you can take full advantage of this prestigious EU initiative and launch an exciting international academic and professional journey.
